What's in Box 218? (1/3/2018)

First Haul of the Year
Despite my habit of letting the weekly haul go untouched until the following week, I somehow escaped the shadow of Mount Unread before reaching the first Wednesday of the year. Today, I enjoyed a fresh start when I stopped by my comic book shop after work to collect the contents of Box 218.

I love my comic book shop. Comics and trades line the walls, though you can find board games, Funko Pops, and trading cards in equal measure. The man who owns the store greets me by name. The women behind the counter are always friendly and ready to help — by which I mean they are more than happy to talk me into buying the first trade of any series I mention having not read yet. Rey always tries to guess my box number from memory. She’s been right the last two weeks in a row; a new record!

If there was a perfect comic book shop, it’s this one.
Let's get reading!
We begin 2018 with Giant Days #30 (BOOM! Studios), Star Wars #41 (Marvel), and Spider-Man (2016) #236 (Marvel) — remind me to address my thoughts on Marvel’s Legacy gimmick later.
Ever since “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (Watch Count: III), I’ve been riding a major Star Wars high. Seeing Luke Skywalker on the top of today’s stack got me psyched, and ever since Kieron Gillen took charge, I’ve been looking forward to each issue more and more.
Speaking of Star Wars comics, the first issue Star Wars Adventures: Forces of Destiny also launched today, which I forgot to add to my box list and had to grab off the new release wall. Inspired by the Forces of Destiny animated webseries, you’ll find a completely different team piloting this rebel cruiser. The title is published by IDW, and Walt Disney’s familiar signature graces the cover.
Hiro would make a terrible Jedi Knight
Am I aware this series is just meant to help push the Forces of Destiny toy line? Of course I am. But my girl Princess Leia Organa is front and center — okay she's front and a little to the left. Plus, with stories about Rey and Ahsoka on the way, you can bet I’ll be reading all of these books.

More importantly, solely women writers and artists are behind every issue, save for this first one, which is written by the team of Elsa Charretier and Pierrick Colinet. I’m happy to hand over my money in support of badass women in comics, telling stories about badass women in Star Wars.

With a cat in my lap and two Star Wars stories in my near future, at least in terms of comics, 2018 is off to a damn good start.
